昆明市与高山市:相隔千里却一见如故 | A Thousand Mile Friendship

Rolling mountains, beautiful environment, long history and colorful folk culture, Kunming and its sister city Takayama in Japan has many things in common, making the “thousand mile friendship” stronger than most.

The friendship between the two cities began in July 2011 when the mayor of Takayama and his delegation visited Kunming and signed the Letter of Intent for Friendly Exchange Cities with the incumbent mayor of Kunming. In September of the same year, the incumbent deputy mayor of Kunming also led a delegation to visit Takayama, which further deepened the friendship between the two cities. In April 2012, the Mayor of Takayama led a delegation to visit Kunming again and signed the Letter of Intent on Developing the Sister-City Relations with Kunming, as well as in July 2012, the Deputy Mayor of Takayama attended the 14th China-Japan-Korea Friendship Cities Conference on behalf the city.

In May 2016, the mayor of Takayama visited Kunming and jointly held the “Kunming–Takayama Tourism Promotion Conference” with Kunming, where discussions on deepening the cooperation in sports, culture and other fields were held. “Kunming is a beautiful city, and I’m deeply impressed by its superior ecological environment, rich cultural resources and unique local customs,” said the mayor of Takayama, who repeatedly expressed his love for Kunming during his visit. He also expressed his wish that the two cities could establish the sister-city relations as soon as possible to give full play to their respective advantages, strengthening exchanges and cooperation, enhancing economic exchanges, as well as carrying out practical cooperation in tourism, culture, education and environmental protection, and other areas, so as to achieve win-win development.

In October 2018, a delegation from Takayama visited Kunming to discuss the signing of the sister-city agreement. On December 21, 2018, Kunming and Takayama officially became sister cities through postal signing. In August 2019, a youth delegation from Takayama visited Kunming and took a tour to the Kunming Municipal Administrative Center where an exchange forum with the Foreign Affairs Office of Kunming Municipal People’s Government was held.

In the future, the two cities will continue to deepen the exchanges and cooperation in tourism, culture and education, allowing the flowers of friendship to bear fruitful fruits.

The size of Takayama is slightly bigger than that of Tokyo, making it the largest city in Japan by area. With a forest coverage rate of 92.5% and the continuous Japan Alps in the northeast, it is richly endowed by nature.
高山市的面积相当于东京都,是日本面积最大的城市。森林覆盖率为92.5%,东北部有连绵的阿尔卑斯山脉,自然环境得天独厚。
Known as “Little Kyoto” for its long history and culture, Takayama boasts numerous fascinating cultural and natural resources such as traditional arts and folk customs, natural monuments and mountain landscapes, attracting about 3.2 million tourists from home and abroad every year.
高山市以悠久的历史与文化广为人知,有“小京都”之称,传统艺能民俗、天然纪念物、山岳景观等引人入胜的人文与自然资源不胜枚举,每年到访的国内外游客约320万人次。

In the Nara period, skilled carpenters from Takayama were sent to the town as “tax”, which showed the importance of craftsmen at that time. In the past, when building houses, most craftsmen would set up buildings with their own style under the standards of environmental protection and overall harmony. Therefore, many coordinated buildings with unique features can be found in Takayama.
在奈良时代,技艺高超的高山市木匠曾被当作“税金”被送进城里,可见当时工匠的重要性。过去在盖房子时,工匠都会在保护环境与整体协调的规范下,建造出有自己风格的建筑,因此在这里可以看到一致却又各具特色的建筑。

Takayama Festival is a famous folk festival, which is listed as one of the three most beautiful traditional festivals in Japan. The magnificent and luxurious omikoshi and matsuriyatai, the active and agile puppets and the reverse turning cars equipped with ingenious devices, all show the superb skills of the craftsmen of Hida City.
高山祭是著名的民俗祭典,被列为全日本最美的三大传统节庆活动之一。绚烂豪华的神轿彩车、动作灵敏的活动偶人、装着巧妙装置的反转车等,均向世人展示飞騨的能工巧匠们精益求精的高超技艺。
